Our purpose is to help fuel the world while delivering value to all our stakeholders.

Coal accounts for over 37% of global electricity supply. In certain remote areas of the world where other power sources are not economically viable, coal is the only way to deliver electricity and heat allowing access to sanitation, healthcare and education — in short it enables societies to function effectively.

Our aim is to produce coal safely, seeking to minimise environmental impact. By introducing new technologies to boost productivity and cost efficiency and by working with local communities, we intend to contribute to global fuel supply in a sustainable manner.

Our Corporate Social Policy is based on international standards including the UN Global Compact, the Social Charter of Russian Business, the ISO 26000 Standard and recommendations of the Global Reporting Initiative.

Our production sites undergo regular audits to assess our compliance with OHSAS 18001 occupational health and safety requirements, ISO 14001 environmental management standards, ISO 9001 quality management standards, ISO 50001 energy management system, Bettercoal global responsible coal supply chain and Vision Zero safety project.

In 2019, we also updated our anti-corruption policy, following which the company received international ISO 37001 certification and SUEK’s compliance system received ISO 19600 ‘Compliance Management System’ certification.

The principles behind our sustainable development and strategy are reflected in corporate regulatory policy documents covering as well: the environment; industrial and occupational safety; quality of coal products; information and agreements defining social and economic relationships between employer and employees.

Risk management and stakeholder engagement are also integral to our sustainability policy. Robust risk management helps us to meet strategic targets and secure long-term growth. Providing reliable access to information means we can engage effectively with stakeholders.

In 2018, Nomura Research Institute, Ltd. (NRI), and Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. (Idemitsu), analysed environmental protection measures and methods at our Vanino Bulk Terminal, through a benchmarking against Japanese coal terminals. As part of the audit, environmental experts assessed the condition of our port equipment and coal transshipment technologies. They concluded that the Vanino Bulk Terminal applied all the best available solutions and international practices to efficiently handle and export coal in adverse climatic conditions.

At the end of 2019, the Murmansk Commercial Seaport passed an inspection for compliance with the requirements of the international environmental standard and confirmed its compliance with international environmental certificate ISO 14001:2015. Following an audit by experts from the ‘Clean Seas’ International Environmental Foundation, the port received the Platinum Certificate of Compliance with the ‘Clean Port’ environmental standard.
