SUEK to invest RUB 21.5bn in development of Apsatsky coal open pit by 2025

According to the PR department of SUEK-Zabaikalye regional production division, by 2025 SUEK is planning to invest RUB 21.5bn in developing Apsatsky coal open pit in Kalarsky district of Zabaikalye region.

Besides infrastructure development the project involves construction of Apsatskaya coal washing plant.

“The amount of investment in construction of the washing plant will be determined after the plant is designed. The estimated cost of phase one of the construction project is RUB 600m. This amount is part of the total investment in the open pit development,” says a PR department representative.

Construction of Apsatskaya WP is to start in January 2018 and phase one of the construction project with 1.5 Mtpa capacity is to be completed by the end of 2021.

As previously reported, by 2025 SUEK is planning to increase coal production from Apsatsky open pit by 7.8 times compared to 2015, or to 3 Mtpa.

Apsatsky coking coal deposit ranks second in Russia in terms of the amount of reserves. It contains 2.2 billion tonnes of various grades of coal sought after by the chemical and metal industries of Russia, China, South Korea, and Japan. Construction of the mine commenced in 2011.

SUEK is the largest coal producer in Russia. In 2016, it is planning to produce over 100 million tonnes of coal versus 97.8 million tonnes last year. JSC SUEK is 100% owned by SUEK LTD, where Andrey Melnichenko holds 92.2% of shares.
