As part of the campaign, on Saturday, 27 March, from 20:30 to 21:30 local time, the company turned off all lights in offices at its mines and service units in Kuzbass, along with all lights in the areas adjacent to buildings, including alleys and parking lots. The units also turned off electrical appliances not involved in the production technology. The Murmansk Commercial Seaport also joined the campaign.
Every year, Earth Hour, organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), unites billions of people in 180 countries. In 2021, it was held under the slogan 'Open Up!' and was dedicated to environmental transparency.
Environmental protection is one of the priority areas of SUEK's activities. Over the past five years, only in Kuzbass its total capital investment in the ecology has exceeded $66 million. One of the major long-term projects is the upgrade and construction of highly efficient modular treatment facilities at the mines, making it possible to reuse treated mine water for process needs.
At the same time, the company also supports environmental projects not directly related to its operations. Including environmental marathon “Zubochistka” in the Celestial Teeth tourist area, regular environmental campaigns “Paper Boom”, “Clean Banks” and “Live, Spring, Live”. In 2020, the project called “Protected Natural Area “Kokuyskoe Swamp”, submitted by SUEK to the prestigious competition “Vernadsky National Ecological Award”, was named the best in the category “Social and Environmental Initiatives”.
