SUEK awarded with Environmental Responsibility Crest

20 October 2017

The award ceremony for the Environmental Responsibility Crests was held in Moscow on 20 October. In the presence of Sergey Donskoy, the Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment of the Russian Federation, SUEK received the Environmental Responsibility Crest for the implementation of its large-scale modernisation programme and the introduction of efficient technologies. Other recipients included Rosatom, Norilsk Nickel, Rossiya Segodnya, and Sergey Donskoy, the Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment of the Russian Federation.

The awards were presented during a diplomatic reception held as part of Russian Eco Week 2017. The event was attended by ambassadors of European countries, deputies of the Russian State Duma and the capital's parliament, as well as public figures and leaders from the media and expert communities.

The Environmental Responsibility Crest was established by a community of environmental leaders, experts and the country’s leading environmental NGOs in 2013. The purpose of the award is to stimulate and support enterprises and organizations which aspire to promote environmental values in their activities as well as support the need for environmental protection.

Ensuring environmental safety, minimising environmental production risks and protecting the environment are integral parts of SUEK's sustainable development strategy. The Group is implementing a series of measures for the protection of atmospheric air, such as the degassing of mines and utilisation of coal-bed methane, the protection of water resources with wastewater treatment initiatives, as well as programmes targeting energy efficiency, land reclamation and biodiversity conservation.

SUEK's environmental activities have been repeatedly acclaimed. In particular, it was the recipient of the EraEco award (with the support of the UNIDO and the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ecology of the Russian Federation), the Evolution Awards, the Eco Best Award, and has been a leader in the WWF environmental responsibility rating of mining companies. Over the next two years, SUEK will allocate approximately RUB 3.5bn (about US$ 60 million) for the implementation of environmental measures. Environmental projects at the Murmansk Commercial Sea Port represent about RUB 350m (about US$ 6 million) in 2017. Environmental investments at the port have increased nine times since SUEK become a shareholder of Murmansk Commercial Sea Port.
